Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said Friday his government would not provide financial compensation to the families of those killed by consuming spurious/illegal liquor. The Janata Dal (United) boss - under sustained fire from the opposition after the death toll from the latest hooch tragedy in the nominally dry state crossed 50 - told the state Assembly 'no compensation will be given' and underlined his 'if you drink, you will die warning.
The police said that it is wrong to call it a hooch tragedy as villagers consumed poisonous substances, namely Methanol, that were being sold as alcohol.
In the hooch tragedy, the patients developed several kinds of health issues and lost their life after allegedly consuming spurious liquor.
Reports say that police have detained some people who were allegedly involved in selling hooch in villages; a SIT has also been formed by Gujarat govt to probe the incident.
Uttar Pradesh government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the hooch tragedy claiming 45 lives in the state. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asked the SIT to submit its report within 10 working days.
