With a view to effectively check the fast depleting groundwater table in the state of Punjab, the state council of ministers on Tuesday resolved to take all necessary administrative and legal steps.
As per the official statement, the agriculture sector disproportionately uses a high amount of 89% of the country’s entire groundwater. The new steps will try to ensure more sustainable methods of cultivation, as large parts of the country routinely face water crisis amid alarming levels of groundwater depletion.
India’s anomalous trajectory with groundwater has created a series of problems across several districts, particularly in the agriculture-heavy belts. In this regard Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY), a Central Sector Scheme is aimed at sustainable ground water management with community participation in select over-exploited and ground water stressed areas in seven States (Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh).
