The militants fired upon 40-year-old Abdul Razaq, an employee in the Social Welfare department from point blank range as soon as he stepped out of a masjid in Kunda Top village of Rajouri’s Thanamandi. The injured was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. Security personnel rushed to the spot and launched a massive cordon and search operation to track down the terrorists.

Razaq's brother reportedly served in the Territorial Army. The incident comes less than a week after a migrant worker from Bihar was shot dead by terrorists in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Earlier on April 8, terrorists had shot and injured a non-local tourist cab driver in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat is scheduled to go for polls in the third phase of ongoing Parliament elections on May 7.

After last week’s attack, a Telegram channel that carries propaganda from The Resistance Front (TRF) - a proxy outfit of the Lashkar-e-Taiba - claimed responsibility for the attack. The terror outfit had termed the killing as a “gift for your elections”.
