Pakistan Elections: 26/11 Mastermind Hafeez Saeed’s son Talha Saeed loses Lahore contest

Lahore, Feb 9: In a big blow to 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, Talha Saeed, his son has lost the Lahore contest amid the voting of the general elections conducted on Thursday.

Latif Khosa, who is backed by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has won the NA-122 seat of Lahore with 1,17,109 votes. Khosa defeated Hafiz Saeed’s son and PML-N’s Khawaja Saad Rafique, who came distant second with 77,907 votes.

Notably, Hafiz Saeed, who is a UN-proscribed terrorist, is the founder of the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). He was the mastermind of the deadly 26/11 attacks in Mumbai and is wanted in India in numerous cases.

Ahead of the general elections, Hafiz Saeed had announced a new party, Pakistan Markazi Muslim League. A BBC Urdu report had said that most of the candidates nominated by Pakistan Markazi Muslim League are either close relatives of Hafiz Saeed or have been associated with banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Marred by internet clampdown and violence, the results of the General Elections will pave a new road for Pakistan’s future. Reports coming in from the country say that it’s a close contest between Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif. Earlier in the day, jailed Imran Khan had claimed victory even as Sharif’s PML(N) continue to lead the counting trends.
 
Khan was disqualified from contesting the elections due to criminal convictions, and his supporters contested as independent candidates. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has secured victory in 11 seats. Nawaz Sharif secured victory in NA-130 constituency with 1,71,024 votes, Geo News reported, citing results from the Election Commission of Pakistan.
 

Former Prime Minister and brother of Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif secured victory in NA-123 seat by garnering 63,953 votes while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independent candidate Afzal Azeem received 48,486 votes.
