Kolkata, Jan 13: Howrah in West Bengal is the dirtiest city in India, according to the recently released annual cleanliness survey, 'Swachh Survekshan'. Notably, the 10 dirtiest cities with a population of over 1 lakh are all from West Bengal. Kalyani, Madhyagram, Krishnanagar, Asansol, Rishra, Bidhannagar, Kanchrapara, Kolkata and Bhatpara are the dirtiest cities in the country after Howrah in the category, the survey found.
Except Kolkata and Bhatpara, the remaining eight cities have a cleanliness score of less than 1,000.
Shillong in Meghalaya as well as Khagaria and Sitamarhi in Bihar also occupied the bottom spots in the rankings. These cities were evaluated for their cleanliness and sanitation practices. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh's Indore, for the seventh consecutive time, clinched the title of the cleanest city in India.
It was followed by Surat (Gujarat), Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh). Among the states, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh were determined the cleanest in India with high sanitation standards.
Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Nagaland were found to be the least clean.The Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh secured the top rank in the category of the cleanest cantonment boards while Nainital Cantonment secured the bottom rank.The Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 were declared in a ceremony presided over by President Droupadi Murmu and saw many other dignitaries in attendance.
The cleanliness survey saw the participation of 4,447 urban local bodies with over 12 crore citizen responses, making it the largest cleanliness survey in the world.
