Recently, Union minority affairs minister Smriti Irani, on January 8, led a non-Muslim Indian delegation, also comprising minister of state for external affairs V. Muraleedharan, to a historic visit to the holy city of Madinah in Saudi Arabia.

Smriti Irani visit to Saudi Arabia

This was termed a historic visit as Irani led the whole delegation wearing Indian attire to Islam's holiest place. Irani and Nirupama Kotru, joint secretary in the minority affairs ministry, were the two non-Muslim Indian women without headgear to be present in Madinah. The visit came after Irani signing the Bilateral Haj Agreement 2024 with Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah on January 7. India has been granted a quota of 175,025 pilgrims for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage. These developments were also seen as a major sign to strengthen bilateral relations.

However, it was obvious, that this development did not go down well with radical Islamists. They started to cry foul over the Indian ministers not wearing hijab in Madinah and called them "kafirs".

They also started to abuse on Saudi Arabia for allowing this and accused the country of diluting Islam.

But, some users of Saudi Arabia came forward to defend them.
