Jerusalem, Sept 5: A Palestinian woman wearing a burqa and hijab attempted to stab a police officer in Jerusalem’s Old City on Monday night, police officials said. Soon after, the woman was immediately arrested.
A Palestinian woman hails from the Jenin area in the northern West Bank. A video of the incident went viral on the social media.
In the video, the 44-year-old pulled out a knife in the Bab Hutta neighborhood, near the Lion’s Gate entrance to the Old City, and tried to stab an officer guarding the area.
The officer was unharmed, as the knife did not penetrate the protective vest he was wearing. He defended against the assailant without gunfire, police said.
Other officers quickly reached the scene and detained her. There were no injuries in the incident, police said.
The chief of police for Jerusalem, Deputy Commissioner Doron Turgeman, showed up to the scene to be briefed on the attack.
The attempted stabbing came as tensions have remained high across the region, amid a string of Palestinian attacks in Israel and the West Bank that have left 27 civilians and three soldiers dead, and several others seriously wounded since the beginning of the year.
