The state-owned Neyveli Lignite Corporation of India Limited (NLCIL) and the Grid Corporation of Odisha Limited (GRIDCO) signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) in Bhubaneswar on Thursday for the delivery of 800 megawatts (MW). According to the deal, GRIDCO would obtain 800 MW of electricity from NLCIL's new Talabira thermal power plant.
"NLCIL and GRIDCO Ltd signed a PPA today in Bhubaneswar at GRIDCO Ltd for 400 MW for stage-1 and 400 MW for stage-2." "Through this agreement, NLCIL has achieved full capacity of 2,400 MW of its Talabira super thermal power station stage-I," NLCIL said in a statement on Thursday.
The agreement was signed by NLCIL Chairman M. Prasanna Kumar and GRIDCO Managing Director Trilochan Panda.
NLCIL had already inked similar agreements with Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Pondicherry for 1,500 MW, 400 MW, and 100 MW power delivery from the Neyveli Talabira super thermal power plant stage-I, respectively, according to the release.
The Talabira thermal power station of NLCIL is one of three units established by the Coal Ministry as part of its diversification objectives.
Coal Secretary Amrit Lal Meena recently told IANS in an exclusive interview that the ministry has chosen to develop three pithead thermal power plants since it has coal, land, and water. One of these is the Talabira thermal plant in Odisha, which will have a capacity of 2,400 MW and is being developed by NLCIL.
The second will be the 2,400 MW Mahanadi Basin thermal power plant in Odisha, which is being constructed by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL).
The third thermal power plant will be built in conjunction with the government of Madhya Pradesh. This 660 MW plant will be built in collaboration between South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) and Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Ltd (MPGENCO).
Meena stated that all three projects are in advanced stages of development and that de-coaled land is being sought for them. De-coaled land is an area where a mine has been closed down after operating.(IANS)
