The Indian Air Force (IAF) has received the first of six modified Dornier Do-228 aircraft made completely by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This purchase is part of an agreement struck by the Ministry of Defence in March to acquire these aircraft for the IAF, with a budget of Rs 667 crore.
The modified Dornier Do-228 aircraft features new engines, composite propellers, enhanced avionics, and a contemporary glass cockpit. These aircraft, which were originally utilized by the IAF for route transport and communication operations, have also played an important part in teaching transport pilots.
The latest batch of six aircraft is outfitted with fuel-efficient engines and five-bladed composite propellers, making them ideal for short-haul flights. They can operate on semi-prepared or short runways, making them very useful in India's northeastern and island areas.
The Dornier Do-228 is a flexible, lightweight transport aircraft that may be used for a variety of tasks. It can perform utility and commuter transit functions, as well as marine monitoring. These new additions to the IAF's fleet will greatly improve its operating capabilities, particularly in distant and difficult places.
The Indian Navy also delivered its Dornier Do-228 maritime patrol aircraft to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) as a demonstration of regional solidarity and cooperation, underscoring the continuing collaboration between India and Sri Lanka and emphasizing the necessity of regional unity.
