According to the report, the refugees, who had long before immigrated to India, praised Mr. Sanghavi and the district officials for expediting the processing of their citizenship petitions.

In addition, it stated that Mr. Sanghavi exhorted them to dedicate themselves "to build a new India" after congratulating them on becoming citizens of India.

The minister said that both the state and the federal government were dedicated to providing refugees with every assistance and assimilating them into society.

The Ahmedabad District Collectorate has so far granted Indian citizenship to 1,149 Hindus from Pakistan, according to the ministry.

The district collectors of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Kutch in Gujarat were given the authority to offer Indian citizenship to members of the minority populations from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh by gazette notifications from 2016 and 2018, according to a press release.
