Lahore, Aug 29: In yet another attempt to blame India for the radical Islamist violence against Jaranwala Christians in Pakistan, the Punjab police has claimed the involvement of Indian intelligence in recent anti-Christian riots which it said was a bid to divert attention from Manipur ethnic violence.

Inspector General of Punjab Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar, in a presser, shared a copy of a news item regarding the mistreatment of Christian women in the Manipur area of India. He also shared another news item of a resolution by the European Union against injustices, violent incidents against Muslim and other minorities in India. He also asserted that "hostile agencies had hatched a conspiracy to divert the attention from their country towards Pakistan".

"The Jaranwala incident has links to hostile agencies. We have arrested three main suspects involved in the attacks including about 180 other people," IG Anwar said while speaking during a press conference in Lahore. "We have already said that efforts are being made to create a rift between Muslims and Christians. The conspiracy was started from the Sargodha incident," the inspector-general of police added.

The police, however, presented no proof to prove its claims against the Indian intelligence.

Not the first time...

Earlier, too, Anwar had claimed that there is "potential foreign involvement in the recent tragic incident in Jaranwala", where a radical Islamist mob unleashed chaos by torching five churches.

In an exclusive interview with SAMAA TV, Anwar indicated that the timing and calculated actions of the main suspects in the incident have raised suspicions of a well-coordinated plan. "Recently, Christian women were raped in neighbouring country. The attention has been diverted successfully".

"While it is too early to conclusively establish external involvement, the Joint Investigation Team is set to delve into this angle", he added.

Anti-Christian violence by radical Islamists

A violent Muslim mob ransacked and torched 21 churches and several houses of Christians on Wednesday over blasphemy allegations in Jaranwala town of Faisalabad district, 130 km from Punjab’s provincial capital Lahore. A Christian cemetery and the office of the local assistant commissioner were also vandalised.

Pakistani authorities have arrested more than 180 people in connection with the unprecedented mob attack on 21 churches in Punjab province.
