New Delhi, Aug 1: The Indian Army has implemented a new common uniform regulation for senior officers with Brigadier and above ranks irrespective of the parent cadre and initial appointment, Army officials said. They said the move will reinforce common identity and Indian Army’s character as a fair and equitable organisation.

The decision was taken after detailed deliberations during the recently-concluded Army Commanders Conference and extensive consultations with all stakeholders. Officials said that headgear, shoulder rank badges, gorget patches, belt and shoes of senior officers of flag rank (Brigadier and above) will now be common and standardised. The flag-rank officers will now not wear any lanyard.
 
The step has been taken to promote and strengthen common identity and approach in service matters amongst senior leadership beyond the boundaries of regiments, officials said. Brigadier and above officers are those who have already commanded units and battalions and are mostly posted at headquarters or establishments where officers from all arms and services work and function together.
 
 
 
 
 
A standard uniform will ensure a common identity for all senior-rank officers and reflect the true ethos of the Indian Army, officials said. There is no change in the uniform worn by Colonels and officers below that rank, Army officials said.
  
Despite of this, identifying the officers' rank is still possible for laymen, only if they are aware of the insignia of the ranks. Here's how to identify the officers based on their insignia;
 
 
1. Field Marshal

Field Marshal is a five–star general officer rank and the highest attainable rank in the Indian Army. Ranked immediately above general, the rank of Field Marshal is not exercised in the regular army structure and is a largely ceremonial or wartime rank, having been awarded only twice, till date. A Field Marshal’s insignia consists of the national emblem over a crossed baton and sabre in a lotus blossom wreath.
  
 
 
2. General

General is a four-star general officer rank in the Indian Army and is the highest active rank in the Indian Army. The insignia of the General rank officer if he is the Chief of the Indian Army, is crossed sword and baton with a five-pointed star and Ashoka emblem above. If the General rank officer of the Army is the Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian forces, then the insignia represents Gold-wreathed tri-service emblem of the Indian Armed Forces; the Naval anchor, crossed Army swords and Air Force eagle, all surmounted by the Ashoka emblem.
  
 
3. Lieutenant General

Lieutenant general is a three-star general officer rank in the Indian Army and is the second-highest active rank in the Indian Army. The insignia of the Lt. General have a crossed sword and baton and Ashoka emblem above. The rank is equivalent in the Indian Navy as Vice Admiral and in the Indian Air Force as Air Marshal.
 
 
 
4. Major General

Major general is a two-star general officer rank in the Indian Army and is the third-highest active rank in the Indian Army, which is equivalent to the rank of rear admiral in the Indian Navy and Air Vice Marshal in the Indian Air Force. The Major General's insignia represents crossed sword and baton and a five-pointed star above.
 
 
 
5. Brigadier

Brigadier is a one-star rank in the Indian Army, who ranks above the rank of Colonel and is equivalent to the rank of Commodore in the Indian Navy and Air Commodore in the Indian Air Force.
