In a surprising move, lyricist Javed Akhtar has come forward to support the Uniform Civil Code in India which is being opposed by the other so-called liberals and leftists.
In the 40-minute interview with The Wire, Javed Akhtar said that he believes a Uniform Civil Code is desirable and necessary. He also emphasized that he wants gender equality in India, without any discrimination whatsoever for either the girl child or the adult woman.
Akhtar also said that India cannot delay giving itself a Uniform Civil Code on the grounds that the "time is not right".
He also took a dig at people opposing Uniform Civil Code. "What is interesting you know, people who are opposing or are known to oppose the Uniform Civil Code in India are dying to send their kids USA and get them green card where there is UCC. They can accept Uniform Civil Code in USA, UK but not in India. Why?
Further, he also while "efforts must be made to convince everyone, we cannot give a veto to extremists of any community"
When asked about the intention behind the prime minister’s advocacy of a Uniform Civil Code, he said this is not something that concerns or matters to him. As he put it, it doesn’t matter if someone with the wrong intentions does the right thing. What matters is the right thing is being done.
Similarly, he said it didn’t matter whether the issue of a Uniform Civil Code is being raised as a dog whistle to target the Muslim community or as an election issue that might improve the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prospects in 2024.
Clips of his supporting are going viral on the internet creating debate about it.
