The number of Nepali Gurkhas joining private military corporations (PMCs), such as the well-known Russian firm Wagner, has increased recently. This pattern demonstrates the charm and appeal of these businesses to Nepali Gurkha troops looking for profitable employment outside of the regular military.

The Gurkhas have a long history of service in many armed forces around the world and are famous for their extraordinary combat skill and dedication. They have long been a vital component of the British Army and are renowned for their courage and commitment. The appeal of Nepali Gurkhas to the private military industry, however, is a recent development.

A variety of security services are provided by private military firms like Wagner, including military training, asset protection, and the provision of armed soldiers. These businesses frequently participate in conflicts and crisis situations around the world and operate outside of national military forces.

There are various reasons why joining PMCs is appealing to Nepali Gurkhas. Financial motivation is one important factor, as PMCs frequently provide higher salary and better job possibilities than traditional military duty. For Gurkhas, who may be looking for better economic prospects to support their families and safeguard their future, this feature is especially alluring.

Additionally, PMCs provide a wide variety of deployments and missions that enable Gurkhas to apply their combat expertise in various situations. This gives them the possibility to increase their expertise, learn new skills, and take part in difficult security missions all over the world.

‘A Cause of Worry’

India has taken note of this development with former Army Chief General Ved Prakash Malik saying that India should stay alert and not employ those individuals who have been recruited as mercenaries. Speaking to ETV Bharat, the former chief said that he understood how a dearth of jobs could lead some to be enticed. “Frankly speaking at this moment, I have no idea about how many Nepalis have joined Wagner in Russia. But whenever there is dearth of jobs, some of them may get enticed to such offers.”
