A second blast near the golden temple within 24 hours

Amritsar, May 08: A second explosion took place at Heritage Street near the Golden Temple in Punjab's Amritsar on Monday morning, hours after a person was injured in a blast at the same spot. This is the second crude bomb blast in the vicinity of the Golden Temple in nearly 24 hours.

 

 

 

The incident happened at around 6.30 am. The police, including the police commissioner, and forensic teams have reached the spot and are collecting the samples for examination. "We are verifying. The situation is normal here. Anti-sabotage, Bomb Squad, and FSL teams are here. One person has received a minor injury in the leg," Mehtab Singh, ADCP, Amritsar was quoted by the media as saying.

 

 

 

The sound of the blast was heard by nearby locals and they also saw smoke in the area after the explosion. The blast happened as an unidentified person hung the explosive substance, a bomb, with a thread from the Heritage Street parking lot. Panic gripped the Heritage Street residents near the Golden Temple on Saturday night in which one person sustained injuries. The blast was heard within a one-km radius of the Golden Temple and glass facades of some buildings were damaged in an explosion. Earlier, a police official said that the blast apparently occurred in a chimney of a restaurant at Heritage Street. The explosion, the cause of which is yet to be known, was reported near an eating joint late on Saturday, police told PTI.

 

 

 

According to sources in Punjab Police, the explosive substance used in the Saturday night explosion was in a metal case and police officials have recovered many pieces of metal from the spot. Police suspect that it was an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast using potassium nitrate and sulfur. Due to this explosion, there is a possibility that a blast happened in the chimney of the eatery's kitchen built in the parking lot of the Golden Temple. Karandeep Singh, a devotee who was present at the spot, said a few girls traveling in an auto-rickshaw were hit by shards of glass and sustained minor injuries after the explosion. The girls had come from Haryana's Panchkula to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, he said.

Amritsar police said, "A News related to blasts in Amritsar is going viral on social media, the situation is under control. An investigation is on to establish the facts of the incident and there is no need to panic. Urge citizens to maintain peace and harmony, advise all to fact-check before sharing." "But, some pieces were recovered by police from the spot after which a forensic team was called from Mohali to determine the cause of the explosion," he said.
