New Delhi, May 23: Union minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani took a jab at Rahul Gandhi, who was disqualified from Parliament after conviction in a defamation case, saying if the Congress leader remained in Wayanad, the district would suffer the same fate as Amethi.
Rahul Gandhi, who represented Amethi before losing the seat to Smriti Irani in 2019, was the MP of Wayanad until he was disqualified a few months ago.
After inaugurating the state-level Women Labour Convention organised by Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram, Smriti Irani said she had the "good fortune" of being the one who "sent away" Rahul Gandhi from Amethi.
"The reason for that was that while he was an MP from Amethi, 80 per cent of the people there did not have electricity connections, there was no District Collector's office, no fire station, no medical college, no Kendriya Vidyalaya or Sainik School and the district hospital had no dialysis centre orX-ray machine. Once he left, all these facilities and infrastructure were made possible there," Smriti Irani said.
She added, "If he remains in Wayanad, it too shall suffer the same fate as Amethi. So, you have to ensure he does not remain here."
Smriti Irani also spoke about the various central government schemes, initiatives or policies implemented in Kerala for women safety, financial security of the people and the social welfare of the citizens of the state.
