Economist, educationist and the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr Ambedkar fought all his life to remove discrimination, degradation and deprivation from society. Here are a few lesser-known images from his inspiring life.
1. Born into a Mahar (‘Untouchable’/ Dalit) family, Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891-1956)'s father served in the British Indian Army at the Mhow cantonment in the Central Provinces (now in Madhya Pradesh). In his, school days, he faced caste discrimination. However, due to his deep interest in learning, Babasaheb didn't stop. He went on to become the first Dalit to be enrolled into the prestigious Elphinstone High School in Bombay. He later won the Baroda State Scholarship for three years and finished his postgraduate education from Columbia University in New York.
2. In 1952, Dr. Ambedkar also received an honorary LLD Doctorate Degree in Law, as part of the University's Bicentennial Special Convocation.
3. Dr. Ambedkar continued to massively protest the caste system by raising concerns in front of the public and forming organizations like "Samata Sainik Dal"

5. Dr Ambedkar took over the Labor portfolio as the Labor Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council in 1942. In a reception, he said in humility that the high office held no charm for him and that he would be the first to quit if his efforts as Labor Member were unsuccessful in improving the conditions of workers of the country.

7. Rambai was the first wife of Dr Ambedkar who said her support was instrumental in helping him pursue his higher education and his true potential. She has been the subject of a number of biographical movies and books. A number of landmarks across India have been named after her. She passed on 27 May 1935.

11. Since 1948, Ambedkar had diabetes. He remained in bed from June to October in 1954 due to medication side effects and poor eyesight. However, his health deterioated during 1955. Three days after completing his final manuscript The Buddha and His Dhamma, Dr Ambedkar died in his sleep on 6 December 1956 at his home in Delhi.
