The Mughal Empire was one of the great powers of its time. Starting as the ruler of a small principality in Central Asia, Babur, a descendant of Timur defeated Ibrahim Lodi of the Delhi sultanate at the first battle of Panipat. This laid the foundation of the Mughal state in India.
