New Delhi, Mar 8: After Pakistan accused India of crimes against women in Kashmir, India on Tuesday responded strongly to Pakistan's foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's comments on Jammu and Kashmir at a UN Security Council debate on women, peace and security.

India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, dismissed Zardari's statement as "baseless and politically motivated."

"Before I conclude, let me dismiss the frivolous, baseless and politically motivated remarks made by the delegate of Pakistan regarding the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir," she said. Kamboj said that her delegation considered it "unworthy" to respond to "such malicious and false propaganda."

She emphasized the importance of the women, peace and security agenda and reaffirmed India's commitment to positive and forward-looking efforts.

Kamboj's sharp retort came after Pakistan Foreign Minister Zardari referred to Jammu and Kashmir in his remarks to the Council debate held under Mozambique's Presidency for this month, on the eve of International Women's Day.

Earlier, Bhutto stated there should be need to establish a monitoring mechanism for crimes against women committed in foreign-occupied territories, particularly in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

According to him, the majority of atrocities and crimes against women occur in situations of foreign occupation and suppression of peoples’ rights to self-determination. He went on to say that the purpose of violence in a situation of foreign occupation was to suppress the civilian population.
