India at Oscars before RRR: Here are 5 Indians who have won Oscars in the past!

Oscars: RRR and The Elephants Whisperers made India proud today as it won the Best Original Song and Best Documentary Short at the 95th Academy Awards. Notably, RRR became the first Indian film to win an Oscar in the Best Original Song category.

As the 2023 Oscars took place today, it is the perfect time to celebrate the achievements of these Indian artists who have made the country proud on the global platform. So, here are five Indians who have won the Oscar trophy in the past.

Bhanu Athaiya

 

 

Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian to win an Academy Award. She won the award for Best Costume Design for the film 'Gandhi' in 1983. Sadly, she passed away in 2020 at the age of 91.

 

Satyajit Ray is considered one of the finest directors of Indian and Bengali cinema, and his legacy remains even today At the 64th Academy Awards, he won an Honorary Academy Award in 1992 for his lifetime achievement in cinema. He was the first Indian to receive this honour.

 

  

 

 

Resul Pookutty won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing for the film 'Slumdog Millionaire' in 2009. He shared the award with Richard Pryke and Ian Tapp. He has continued to make India proud and most recently he won the National Film Award for Best Audiography for the film 'Tashkent Files' in 2020.

 

 

 

Popular music composer AR Rahman won two Academy Awards in 2009 for his work on 'Slumdog Millionaire.' The composer won the award for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for 'Jai Ho.' He became the first Indian to win two Oscars in the same year. It should be noted that he won these two awards for a British production.

 

 

 

 

Gulzar Sahab, a famous personality who also needs no introduction, is an Indian poet, lyricist, author, screenwriter, and film director. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 'Jai Ho' from the film 'Slumdog Millionaire' in 2009. He shared the award with A.R. Rahman.
