AAP wins MCD mayoral election on the fourth attempt

New Delhi, Feb 22: After a 70-day gap, Delhi has finally elected its new mayor and the winner is Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Shelly Oberoi. She beat BJP's Rekha Gupta by 34 votes. In total, she won 150 votes out of 266. The mayoral elections were held at the Civic Centre.

The mayoral election was conducted following a Supreme Court order after three earlier failed attempts to hold the polls. BJP MP from New Delhi Constituency Meenakshi Lekhi was the first one to cast her vote. She was followed by other MPs like Sanjay Singh, Hansraj Hans, and Ramesh Bidhuri.
 
 
 
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia took the opportunity to congratulate her on the win. "The goons lost, the public won. Many congratulations to all the workers as the AAP candidate has become the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Once again whole hearted gratitude to the people of Delhi. Many many congratulations to the first Mayor @OberoiShelly of AAP," he said in a tweet. Shelly Oberoi, who was born in Delhi, has been the elected councilor from Ward 86 in the civic elections. She has done her Ph.D. from IGNOU’s School of Management Studies. She has been an assistant professor at several reputed universities. Inspired by the ideology of the Aam Aadmi Party, she joined as an activist in 2013. She became the Delhi State Vice President of Aam Aadmi Party’s women’s wing 2 years ago. Prior to winning the elections, Shelly Oberoi had said, "I would like to thank Shri Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party for entrusting me with this responsibility. Over the next few months, we will all work together to make Delhi the city that it should have been." When describing the priorities as the mayor of MCD Dr. Shelly Oberoi said, "the party had given 10 guarantees during the elections, they will be fulfilled. Delhi will be cleaned and transformed. The promises made by Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal to the public will be fulfilled. The BJP had not done any work and had turned Delhi into the garbage, we will fix all of it now."

The municipal House began half an hour late at around 11.30 am. After the mayoral poll, election to the posts of deputy mayor and six members of the standing committee will be held, presided over by the new mayor.
