GRSE delivers India’s ‘largest-ever’ survey vessel to navy

Defence public sector undertaking (PSU) Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. Delivered the survey vessel, INS Sandhayak to the Indian Navy on Monday.

According to an official INS Sandhayak is the of four survey vessels being built by GRSE for the Navy. The ship, measuring 110 meters in length was launched on December 5th, 2021. Has since undergone fitting out and trials. It was officially delivered on December 4th coinciding with Navy Day.
 
The delivery protocol was signed between GRSE Chairman and MD Commodore (Retd.) P.R.. The commanding officer of the vessel Commodore R.M. Thomas. Notably this new INS Sandhayak is a successor, to a commissioned survey vessel of the name that served in the Navy from 1981 until its decommissioning, in 2021.
 
According to the official the survey ships developed by GRSE have the ability to conduct deep water hydrographic surveys of port and harbor approaches.
 
Additionally they can determine navigation channels and routes. These Sandhayak class vessels also contribute to Indias capabilities by conducting surveys of limits and gathering oceanographic and geographical data for defense purposes.
 
Furthermore each ship is equipped to carry a helicopter participate in low intensity combat function, as a hospital ship and provide assistance during emergencies and disaster relief operations.
