J&K: Srinagar NIT student booked for "hurting religious sentiments", rusticated after Muslim students protest; had shared video on Prophet

Srinagar, Nov 30: In a shocking development, the Jammu & Kashmir Police booked a Hindu student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, on November 29 for allegedly “insulting Islam” and “outraging the religious feelings” after several groups of Muslim students started to protest in the Kashmir Valley.

A case had been registered under Section 295A (malicious acts intended to outrage the religious feelings), 153 and 153A (vilification of the founders and prophets of religion) of the Indian Penal Code, the police said.
 
The First Information Report (FIR) was registered following hundreds of students streaming on to the NIT campus in Srinagar on Tuesday evening against the non-local engineering student for allegedly posting the “blasphemous video”.
 

What had he shared?
 

Notably, he shared a video of the son of Hamas leader Hassan Yousef, Masab Hassan Yousef in which he is criticizing Islam and calls it an intolerant religion. This was called an "objectionable post" which caused an uproar in social media.
 
 
 
Apart from this, there have been reports that the protests intensified after they got to know that the Hindu student, who is from Maharashtra was in a relationship with a Muslim girl and called it a case of "Bhagwa Love Trap". Now, they are trying to frame him in a blasphemy case. 
 

Protests take place in Kashmir Valley

 
Besides, NIT College, ripples of the alleged incident at NIT were felt at Srinagar’s Amar Singh College, where students took out a march on Wednesday demanding action against the student. Protests were also seen at Islamia College of Science and Commerce in downtown Srinagar.
 
The alleged incident comes at a time when another university in Kashmir is already simmering. On Sunday, seven students of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at Shuhama were arrested and booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act after another student complained that he was allegedly threatened and pro-Pakistan slogans were raised following Australia’s victory against India in the cricket World Cup final.
