The Nirbhay class long-range cruise missiles are subsonic in speed and are being developed in-house by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).The government is evaluating a service proposal to induct Nirbhay class cruise missiles.

The discussion is at an advanced level, and if approved, it will mean that all three armies will be able to hit targets with subsonic cruise missiles, according to defense sources.

The government approved the missile's inclusion in the inventory of the other two services around two years ago.The subsonic Nirbhay class cruise missiles, along with the supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles, will be a lethal combination in the forces' arsenal, giving commanders alternatives in times of battle.

The missiles will also be part of the rocket force being built up gradually by the Indian defense forces. The troops are also considering bringing in medium-range ballistic missiles for use in conventional operations. The defense forces have just been given permission to induct large numbers of Pralay ballistic missiles for employment in conventional roles in the rocket force that they are developing.

According to reports, the various forces will have these ballistic missiles as well as cruise missiles in their inventory, and after that process is completed, they may form an integrated force to establish a distinct wing. The improved range of BrahMos cruise missiles has also provided a considerable boost to the defense forces. A long-range cruise missile test is also scheduled for the near future.
