Senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and Member of Legislative Council (MLC) K Kavitha on Tuesday slammed the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi on the issue of the caste census while addressing a public meeting in Telangana’s Nizamabad.
Speaking at the meeting, she said that the Congress party’s pitch for the caste census is a “noise before the elections”.
Raising questions about the Congress party's inability to take up a Backward Classes (BC) census, Kavitha added, "This Congress leader (Rahul Gandhi) started talking about the census of the BC population. When they were in power for 60 years, they did not do it. Now he ( Rahul Gandhi) says he will do something for BCs,”
Kavitha also hit out at the BJP, along with the Congress, on the issue of establishing a separate Union ministry for the Backward Classes and added, “Why are Congress and BJP silent on the formation of a separate ministry for BCs at the Centre?”
She further added that Telangana CM and BRS patriarch KCR passed a resolution for a 33 per cent resolution for the Backward Classes when he first took oath as the CM of Telangan in 2014.
Kavitha also stressed that all the political parties should "take note of the importance of the caste census to ensure social justice for all the Backward Classes in the country."
She also supported a sub-quota for the Backward Classes in the women's reservation. Notably, the Women's Reservation Bill was passed by Parliament in a special session. The Bill, which is not an Act of Parliament, seeks to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies
