Panaji, January 05: With an aim to pay rich tribute to the former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Goa's Mopa Greenfield International Airport will now be named after four-time Goa Chief Minister Manohar. The airport has been named after the late Manohar Parrikar in recognition of his contribution to building up modern Goa.
This development comes after the Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave ex-post facto approval for the naming of Greenfield International Airport Mopa in Goa as Manohar International Airport.
“To fulfil the cherished aspirations of the people of the State of Goa, the Chief Minister of Goa conveyed the unanimous decision of the Cabinet of State Government of Goa to name the Greenfield International Airport, Mopa, Goa as ‘Manohar International Airport – Mopa, Goa’,” an official release said.
“The Airport has been named after Late Dr Manohar Parrikar, former Chief Minister and Ex-Raksha Mantri of Union of India in recognition of his contribution in building up modern Goa,” the release added.
Meanwhile, the Manohar airport, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month, will begin domestic operations today. Indigo Airlines flight from Hyderabad has become the first to land at the newly opened Manohar International Airport (MIA) in North Goa.
