New York, Sept 23: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, who is on an 11-day visit to US, took a veiled dig at China for putting a hold on the listing of Pakistan-based terrorist at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Speaking at the UNSC briefing on Ukraine 'Fight against impunity', Jaishankar said, "Security Council must send an unambiguous and unequivocal message", adding, "Politics should never ever provide cover to evade accountability. Nor indeed to facilitate impunity".
Without mentioning China, the EAM said, "Regrettably, we have seen this of late in this very chamber, when it comes to sanctioning some of the world’s most dreaded terrorists."
Further, he said, "If egregious attacks committed in broad daylight are left unpunished, this Council must reflect on the signals we are sending on impunity. There must be consistency if we are to ensure credibility."
China has been putting a hold on listing Pakistan-based terrorists in several instances. Recently, China put a hold on the listing of the key mastermind of 26/11 terror attack, Sajid Mir, in the UNSC's international terror list--the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions committee.
Apart from this, China has put hold on Abdul Rehman Makki, LeT and Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) leader as well as Abdul Rauf Azhar, the brother of Jaish-e Mohammed (JEM) chief Masood Azhar was protected by Beijing.
