On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, NewsBharati has come up with an initiative to celebrate India's Independence. We have tried to attempt to introduce 75 Legendary Women of India who have made immense contributions in their respective fields.
Born in pre-independent Pakistan, Amrita Pritam was an Indian novelist and poetess, who preferred writing in Punjabi and Hindi. Although she chose to live in India after the partition, her work remained popular in both countries.
During the challenging times of the Indian independence movement, Pritam published her first collection of verses at the age of 16. Starting her lyrical journey as a romantic poet, soon she changed paths to become part of the Progressive Writers' Movement. The ideological impact is clearly visible in her collection, 'Lok Peed' where she openly criticized the war-torn economy, after the Bengal famine of 1943.
