Mumbai, August 8: The Maharashtra cabinet expansion will take place on Tuesday, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said on Monday. Earlier it was said that the exercise will be carried out before August 15.

Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis were sworn in as chief minister and deputy chief minister respectively on June 30 after resignation of Uddhav Thackeray due to a rebellion in the Shiv Sena ranks.

Since then, they have been functioning as a two-member cabinet, getting criticism from opposition leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

On Saturday, Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar said that more than 35 days have passed since Shinde and Fadnavis took oath as the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister respectively, but the cabinet is not formed yet.

Asked about it, Fadnavis said that he “conveniently forgets” that there were just five ministers for over a month when he was in the power.

Fadnavis has said the BJP has embarked on a mission to improve its footprint in Maharashtra in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by identifying 16 parliamentary constituencies where opposition parties have had a consistent winning streak.
