On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, NewsBharati has come up with an initiative to celebrate India's Independence. We have tried to attempt to introduce 75 Legendary Women of India who have made immense contributions in their respective fields.
"In the early 90s, when cinema was a rising industry in India, the thought of women acting in cinema was considered a taboo. It was not a ‘respectable’ job for women. This is exactly why, Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, had to use male actors for female roles in the first Indian film, Raja Harishchandra.
However, in his second movie ‘Mohini Bhasmasur’, India saw its first actress Durgabai Kamat, a Maharashtrian woman, who broke the glass ceiling by taking courageously pursuing her career in acting.
'Mohini Bhasmasur' was also the acting debut of her daughter Kamlabai, the first child actress in Indian cinema.
Newsbharati pays respect to the bold act of Durgabai Kamat that changed the course of women in Indian cinema"
