Moradabad, Jul 27: A Kanwar Yatra procession was blocked from passing through a Muslim locality in Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad on Monday. The standoff, which was resolved after the official intervention, took place in Ibrahimpur village and involved local devotees who had collected water from a nearby area. The development also comes amid a political furor sparked by several communal disputes in the state.
Visuals from the site showed women and children placing cots on the route to create a barricade, prompting heated debate. Eventually, a smooth passage was ensured for the pilgrims after the local administration and the police intervened in the dispute. According to the police, the situation remains calm in the village.
Every year, thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva collect water from the Ganga and offer it to the deity at temples back home. The Kanwar Yatra is being taken out in the state after a gap of two years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier today Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had undertaken an aerial survey of the ongoing Kanwar Yatra in the western part of the state. In a video conference with senior officials, the chief minister directed that health posts be set up at various places along the Kanwar Yatra route. The CM also directed officials to shower petals on the Kanwariyas.
Earlier today, one Kanwariya was killed and seven others were injured when the van they were traveling in was hit by a tractor trolley from behind in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly. All the eight persons were taken to the hospital, where the victim, identified as Girish Gupta, succumbed to injuries during treatment. There were a total of 12 persons in the van, including children.
According to the Meerganj police spokesman, the police immediately reached the spot and evacuated the passengers from the van. All the passengers are residents of Chaneta village. According to reports, the Kanwariyas were coming from Haridwar after taking 'Ganga Jal'.
