Born as Keshav Gangadhar Tilak, he was an Indian nationalist, teacher, and an independence activist. People know him for being one of the first and strongest advocates of Swaraj ("self-rule"). He is known for his quote in Marathi: "Swarajya is my birthright and I shall have it!"
Such was his presence during the Independence movement, that the British colonial authorities called him "The father of the Indian unrest." He was also conferred with the title of "Lokmanya", which means "accepted by the people (as their leader)". Mahatma Gandhi called him "The Maker of Modern India".
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born on July 23, 1856 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. So, to mark his birth anniversary, we have compiled 10 of the most interesting images about Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak and his life-
1. Lokmanya Tilak seen here with Shri Rajmal Lakhichand at Malkapur for the Swarajya Tour. 'On 8th Feb, Lokmanya gave a lecture on the need for Swarajya at Malkapur. Crowd was around 10,000. Shri Rajmal Lakhichand was the Chairperson,' the description in the below says.
2. Lokmanya Tilak seen here with the family of Mr Saklatwala in London in 1918. He spent 11 months in the UK. He went to fight the libel suit that he had initiated against Sir Valentine Chirol for the derogatory remarks made by the latter in his book 'Indian Unrest'.
3. Lokmanya Tilak (4th from left, last row) along with his BA colleagues at Deccan College, Pune in 1873. He was one of the only 7 students who passed the BA exam. Only 18 appeared for the exam. Tilak & Agarkar decided to work towards the goal of Swarajya here in Deccan College instead of taking up a Govt job. The limited extent of education in India eventually led them to form the Deccan Education Society in Pune.
4. Lokmanya Tilak along with Annie Besant started the Home Rule Movement in 1916. He toured Maharashtra & Karnataka in order to spread the idea of Home rule. Below he is seen with leaders from Karnataka at Gadag in 1916.

7. The three pillars of Swarajya - Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak & Bipin Chandra Pal or Lal-Bal-Pal. The trio was responsible for igniting the minds of Indians & arousing them against the British all over India.
8. Lokmanya Tilak wrote 'Geeta Rahasya', a treatise on the religious scripture 'Shrimad Bhagvat Geeta' in the Mandalay jail from 1910-1912. Geeta Rahasya is based on the theory of 'Karma Yog'.
9. Lokmanya Tilak reached Mandalay on 24th September 1908. A photo of Lokmanya in his cell. Lokmanya's daily schedule consisted of writing 'Geeta Rahasya' & penning notes for appeal in Court. He was banned from reading newspapers. He used his time in jail to learn German, Pali & French languages. Special permission had to be taken for him to receive books from Pune. All those books eventually filled out six cupboards in his cell.
