Sometimes we just do not take a second to judge someone to regret later.
This is my story.
Posted on Jammu border (my first posting) as Lieutenant in 1982.
One afternoon, went to a medical unit for some official job. The concerned officer was not available for me, so landed up in their Basketball court for some friendly shooting. They told me to pick up my team, since I was guest to them and a young officer. I was tall so everyone assumed, I must be good basketball player.
Quarter Master of the unit whispered in my ears to pick up a player. I saw that guy and rejected him , he was too short for basketball.
I picked up my team, all tall guys .
The team against us , we found to our horror was all raw players , except that short guy which I rejected for my team.
My God, that short Orissa guy was virtually all over , almost tireless and virtually dancing in the court .
We lost very badly , I dare not tell you the final score.
That lesson I took , never reject someone just on the basis of one parameter or first impression only.
Take your time to pick up or reject someone.
Winning or losing a friendly basketball match may not be important but rejecting a right guy for right job may cost millions to the company.
