CDS appointment update: Govt amends Army Act to include serving and retired Lt Gen rank officials

New Delhi, Jun 7: In a major step taken by the Centre, in the selection process of the next CDS (Chief of Defence Staff), the Indian govt amends the Army Act in order to include serving and retired Lt Gen rank officials; below the age of 62 years, for the coveted post.

Based on reports coming in and the statement of Defence Ministry, it has been confirmed that the Indian govt has amended the Army Act, in order to include serving and retired Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) rank officials, who are aged below the age of 62 years, for the desired post. The same has also been forwarded for the Indian Navy as well as the Indian Air Force, the post of Defence Chief.
 
 
 
 
 
According to the statement issued by the ministry of Defence, "The Central govt may, if considered necessary, in public interest, appoint as Chief of Defence Staff, an officer who is serving as Lieutenant General or General or an officer who has retired in the rank of Lieutenant General or General but has not attained the age of sixty two years at the date of his appointment."
 
The statement further adds, "The Central govt may, if considered necessary, in public interest, extend the service of the Chief of Defence Staff for such period as it may deem necessary subject to a maximum age sixty five years."
