Ranchi, June 11: At least two people were killed while 10 were injured in police open firing during the violent protest that erupted in Ranchi after Friday prayers over remarks against Prophet Muhammed made by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
" Two people have succumbed to their injuries out of total injured who were brought to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) after the violence in Ranchi," confirmed RIMS authorities said. The deceased were identified as Mobasir of Islamnagar and Sahil of Christia Nagar on the Mahatama Gandhi Road.
Apart from civilians, 11 police personnel got injured during the violent protest. Senior superintendent of police Surendra Kumar Jha has suffered severe injuries.
The tension prevailed in the area after protesters took to the streets and began pelting stones and torching several vehicles. Different videos of the incident are going viral on social media. To control the situation, police officials resorted to lathi-charge and then opened fire. As per reports, the firing of bullets took place from both sides (protesters as well as Police) after the violence erupted.
The district administration acted immediately and imposed a curfew in violence-hit areas of Ranchi thereby bringing the situation under control. All internet services were temporarily suspended in Ranchi till 6 am on Saturday i.e June 11, in wake of protests in the city.
Speaking on the situation on the ground, DIG Anish Gupta said that the situation is currently under control. He added that police have been trying their best to normalise the situation by deploying heavy police deployment all over the city.
