Karwar Naval base to host 30 warships and submarines; making it one of the largest naval bases in Asia

Bengaluru, May 27: The Karwar naval base of Karnataka will be hosting 30 warships and submarines, making it one of the largest naval bases in Asia by the year 2025. The Karwar naval base is being developed under Project Seabird, over 11,000 acres.

Project Seabird that has undertaken the recent developments at the Karwar Naval base, aims to provide fleet support and maintenance to warships. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is currently on his two day visit to the naval base on Thursday (May 26) and Friday (May 27). The defence minister is being accompanied by Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar.

Defence Minister Singh is visiting the naval base in order to review the progress of Project Seabird, for the second time. The Karwar naval base is an important base of the Indian navy. It is the home base of India's only aircraft carrier; INS Vikramaditya. Besides, the upcoming aircraft carrier 'INS Vikrant' is also planned to be based at the Karwar base.
 
Other than Indian navy's Project Seabird, the Karwar Naval Air Station is also being constructed according to the Karnataka state govt's plan of expanding the runway, which will eventually also facilitate civil flight operations and will boost the state's economy.

The first phase of Project Seabird comprised construction of a deep-sea harbour, breakwaters dredging, a township, a naval hospital, a dockyard uplift centre and a ship lift and was completed in 2005. The second phase of the project envisages expanding facilities to house additional warships and set up a new Naval Air Station, among other plans.
