New Delhi, May 23: It is a proud moment for India as the World Health Organisation (WHO) has honoured India's one million all-women ASHA workers for their crucial role and contribution towards extending health care facilities in the rural areas.

The WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced six awards on Sunday to recognise outstanding contributions to advancing global health, demonstrated leadership, and commitment to regional health issues. The six awardees included the Accredited Social Health Activist Workers (ASHA).

It should be noted that ASHA volunteers are the Indian government’s affiliated healthcare workers who are the first point of contact in rural India. Most of them gained the spotlight during the peak of the pandemic in India for conducting door-to-door checks to trace coronavirus patients.

ASHA workers were also among the health warriors who pioneered emergency assistance operations amidst the pandemic and later on, became the face of the vaccination drive in rural India.

Reacting to the announcement, the Prime Minister said, "They are at the forefront of ensuring a healthy India. Their dedication and determination are admirable."
