At an event in New Delhi, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "As long as the word 'madrasa' exists, children will not be able to think about becoming doctors and engineers." Continuing his statement, he also suggested that there should be more emphasis on teaching science, mathematics, biology, botany and zoology to all children, where they study aiming to become doctors, engineers, professors and scientists.

He pointed out, "If you tell them they will not become doctors or engineers if they study in madrasas, they themselves will refuse to go. Teach the Quran to your children, but at home. Admitting children in Madrasas is, in fact, a violation of their basic human rights." The Assam CM was replying to a question suggesting memory of Muslim children is sharp as they can easily memorize any verse of Quran.

Replying back to the question, the CM said, "All Muslims were Hindus. No one was born a Muslin in India. Everyone was a Hindu in India. So if a Muslim child is extremely meritorious, I will give partial credit to his Hindu past." The Assam govt had passed a bill called the Assam Repealing Bill, 2020 that abolished all state-run Madrassas and transformed them into regular schools. It came into effect from Apr 1, 2021.
