1 killed, another injured in communal clashes in Gujarat on Ram Navami

Ahmedabad, April 11: Only days after a Hindu New year celebration procession was attacked when passing through in Karauli, Rajasthan, a similar incidence took place in Gujarat. A Ram Navami Shobha Yatra organized on April 10, at Chhaparia, Himmatnagar of Sabarkantha in Gujarat was targeted by local Muslim goons; stones were pelted at it.

Apart from stone-pelting, some vehicles were also vandalized in this incident. The incident happened in the afternoon when the Ram Navami procession was passing through a Muslim majority locality named Chhapariya.
 
 
However, it was attacked when the Hindu religious prcession reached the Muslim dominated area. Many vehicles, which were part of the Ram Navami procession, were damaged in the attack, and one open Jeep was burnt by the attackers.

A convoy of Himmatnagar police had reached the spot on being informed about the violence. The police also released several teargas cells to control the situation.

After stone-pelting and vandalism, unrest prevailed in the area. There was a lot of anger among the devotees as the procession of the deity was pelted with stones.

A 65-year-old man was killed and another injured as communal clashes erupted in Gujarat’s Khambhat during a procession taken out on the occasion of Ram Navami on Sunday.

“The body of an unidentified man was recovered from the spot in Khambhat, where two groups pelted each other with stones after a clash broke out between them during a Ram Navami procession late this afternoon,” Anand district Superintendent of Police Ajeet Rajyan said.

“Another person was injured and a few shop cabins were set on fire during the incident,” he said, adding that the situation was brought under control using tear gas shells and heavy police deployment in the sensitive areas.

According to the the SP, the person whose body was found, died due to injuries he suffered during the clash. Investigation into the incident is underway.
