Rare ancient sculpture of Lord Vishnu found on river Jhelum in Pulwama’s Kakapora

Pulwama, Mar 31: In the last 6 months, many ancient Hindu sculptures, including the 1,200-year-old Goddess Durga Idol, were found in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Adding another sculpture to the list, a unique sculpture of Lord Vishnu dating back to the 9th century CE was recovered from the river Jehlum in the Kakapora area of Pulwama district on Wednesday.

As per the reports, the sculpture was found when some labourers were extracting sand from the river Jehleum in the Lelhara Kakapora area of the Pulwama district. Soon after that, they informed the police about it, who then rushed to the spot and took the sculpture into their possession.
 
 
The sculpture is made of black and green marble. As per the reports, the sculpture is called the Vaikunth Chaturmurti sculpture. It is a three-headed Vaishno sculpture. It has Lord Vishnu with the heads of Varaha and Narsimha.
 
The police have handed over the sculpture to the Department of Archives, Archaeology, and Museums of Jammu and Kashmir.

After examining the sculpture, Deputy Director of Archives, Archaeology, and Museums of Jammu and Kashmir, Mushtaq Ahmad said that it is a three-headed Vaishno and a unique sculpture of the 9th century. "It is a green stone sculpture which is very rare and its art is highly decorated but it's few parts are missing," he said.
 
Last year, a 1,200 year-old sculpture of Goddess Durga was found in Jammu and Kashmir by the local police. The sculpture was found from the Jhelum river in Budgam district’s Khan Sahib area as some labourers were mining sand from the river bed.
