The brutal Kashmiri Pandits genocide that happened in 1990 has been a major part of Indian history, however, people have either shied away or are oblivious about the exodus. There have been several "narratives" put up in the public. The tragic incidents have not been talked about much in the public domain but it has been gaining attention across the nation for a while now. But why this sudden change?
The Kashmir Files was released on Mar 11, 2022, that showcased the brutality by Islamic Jihadis against the Kashmiri Pandits. It resulted in an exodus in the 1990s and the subsequent genocide. The hard-hitting film honestly uncovered a lot of untold stories buried deep inside the country’s history and at the same time makes people question the manipulative system. On the other hand, many of us also know about a movie called "Shikara" which was based on a similar line but it was a love story.
With The Kashmir Files becoming the talk of the town, the netizens have been questioning the credibility of the "Shikara" movie released in 2020. It has led to several debates of how the film by Vidhu Vinod Chopra had sidelined the plight of Kashmiri Pandits whereas the Kashmir Films has portrayed the true events of the Hindu community.
A video also went viral of a Kashmiri Pandit woman, who in the Shikara premiere, questioned the plot of the movie in the presence of Vidhu Vinod Chopra. While being a Kashmiri Pandit herself, she weepingly stated that genocide was not narrated at all. She stated that Kashmiri Pandit women were raped and murdered but the movie did not display it in any single frame of the movie
There was also a comparative video in which public reaction to Shikara and The Kashmir Files complied. After The Kashmir Files premier was done in Jammu where every person was sobbing after watching the film, someone saw their father in the film someone saw their sister in the film.
This has led to people questioning the Shikara for falsely portraying a narrative that did not speak about the Kashmiri Pandits' exodus.
The netizens have raised questions on how politics are being played and double standards shown by the so-called politicians and liberals
Synopsis of both the movies-
a) The Kashmir Films - The movie directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri revolves around the journey of a young student Krishna (Darshan Kumar), who goes from being brainwashed by professor Radhika Menon (Pallavi Joshi) to finally learning about the true events of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. It portrays the events surrounding the exodus as a genocide, in which thousands of Kashmiri Hindus were massacred, women raped and children shot. The displaced families are shown living as refugees till today.
b) Shikara - The film is based on the Kashmiri pandit exodus of 1990. The story revolved around the love story of Shanti and Shiv Dhar, who are Kashmiri Pandits in the backdrop of the Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir. The book "Our Moon Has Blood Clots" by Rahul Pandita has inspired many parts of the movie.
Here are some more reactions to both the movies.
If one can sympathize on Schindler’s list and call it a classic but say Kashmir files are fake, Kashmir genocide was never appropriated by your predecessors you will not mention it because it will suit your narrative of Muslim victimhood. But is it possible to hide the truth in this age of social media?
It seems like Vivek Agnihotri made a mistake by recording 4000 hours of real-life testimonies of victims of the Kashmiri Hindu genocide and turning it into a fact-based film. He should have also turned this genocide into a love story. This would have won him accolades from Bollywood. Having said that the difference of real reviews of The Kashmir Files & Shikara speaks volumes of the content shown
