Lucknow, Feb 14: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth on Monday, February 14, said that although Samajwadi Party had fielded Azam Khan in the assembly election, the party's president Akhilesh Yadav did not want the SP leader to come out of jail as it would threaten his position.

"Akhilesh doesn't want Azam Khan to come out of jail as it would threaten the SP chief's position," Yogi Adityanath said. "The state government has nothing to do with these cases — whether they are related to Azam Khan or anyone else. It is the court that grants bail," he added.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday had mocked the BJP, saying that this is the "new India" of the saffron party where Azam Khan, who built a university is in jail, and a Union minister's son (Ashish Misra) who is accused of killing farmers, is out on bail.

Azam Khan is fighting Nawab Kazim Ali Khan for the Rampur constituency that is voting on Monday. His son Abdullah Azam Khan has been pitted against Nawab junior, Haider Ali Khan, in Suar in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

Azam Khan has been in jail since February 2020 in connection with several cases of land grabbing, encroachment, etc. lodged against him by the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government.
