Govt of India & state of Manipur enter Cessation of Operation Agreement with Insurgent group ZUF

New Delhi, Dec 28: In a recent update against insurgency in North Eastern states, the Govt of India and the State govt of Manipur has entered into a Cessation of Operation Agreement with the Zeliangrong United Front in New Delhi, dating yesterday (Dec 27). The move is expected to bring in considerable peace in the region.

 

 

 

 

According to the statement of the govt, the move has come in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of an ‘Insurgency free and prosperous North East’ as well as under the guidance of Union Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah. The Zeliangrong United Front had been active in the region for more than a decade. The move will be a significant boost to the peace process in Manipur.

 

 

 

 

 

The agreement was signed by senior officers of Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Govt of Manipur with the representatives of ZUF in the presence of the Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh. Representatives of the armed Group agreed to abjure violence and join the peaceful democratic process as established by law of the land.

 

 

The agreement provides for rehabilitation and re-settlement of the armed cadres. A Joint Monitoring Group will be constituted to oversee enforcement of the agreed ground rules. Established in 2011, the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) is a Naga group active in Manipur that claims its objective is to safeguard the interest of ‘Zeliangrong Naga tribes in Manipur, Assam and Nagaland. It aims to create a ‘Zeliangrong’ state within the Indian Union comprising the Zeliangrong Naga tribe’s area in Manipur, Assam and Nagaland.
