Palakkad, December 12: A pregnant tribal woman in Kerala was carried by her relatives on a makeshift stretcher/doli for three-and-a-half kilometres since the road to her village was damaged and the ambulance could not reach her. After reaching the main road, the ambulance took her to the hospital.
The incident took place at Attapadi Taluk in Kerala’s Palakkad area. The pregnant woman, identified as Sumathi Murukan, had gone into early labour. Initially, her delivery was scheduled to take place next week.
However, at midnight, she started showing symptoms of giving birth and called for an ambulance from Kottathara Tribal Speciality Hospital to her Tribal village of Kadukumanna. However, the ambulance was only able to arrive at the main road, located three-and-a-half kilometres away.
The ambulance could not reach her village since the road was damaged. So, Sumathi’s relatives jumped into action and built a temporary stretcher/doli, put her on it, and walked three-and-a-half kilometres through the forest to reach the main road where the ambulance was supposed to arrive.
The ambulance, which arrived later, took the pregnant tribal woman to the hospital. After reaching the hospital, Sumati gave birth to a boy. Both the mother and the child are reportedly in stable condition.
