Amritsar, Nov 07: Secessionist group Sikhs For Justice or SFJ has announced legal aid of Rs 10 lakh to defend the man who shot and killed Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri in Punjab's Amritsar. Suri was on a sit-in protest outside a temple over alleged sacrilege of Hindu idols and images when he was shot by Sandeep Singh.
Singh, 31, was taken into custody from the spot itself.
SFJ has termed the shooting of Sena leader Suri "assassination" and not "terrorism". SFJ's General Counsel in a video message from Paul Coffee Arena in Canada, where Khalistan referendum voting is taking place, said, "SFJ stands behind Bhai Sandeep Singh who took down Suri with referendum by a bullet."
Five shots were fired at Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri (58) during the protest outside a temple in a busy Amritsar locality on Friday. He collapsed after being shot and was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries. Suri was protesting against the management of Gopal Mandir on Majitha Road -- one of the busiest places in the city -- after some broken idols of Hindu deities were allegedly found on the roadside, which he termed an act of sacrilege.
The accused, Sandeep Singh alias Sunny (31), was arrested and the .32-bore licensed weapon used in the crime was seized. He owns a garment shop near the protest site, according to police.
