Azam Khan's name removed from the voters' list

Rampur, Nov 18: Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan's name has been removed from the voters' list in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur. The Rampur Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) took the decision to remove Azam Khan's name from the electoral roll on the basis of a complaint by BJP by-poll candidate Akash Saxena.
Azam Khan, who was Rampur MLA, was disqualified following his conviction last month in a 2019 hate speech case. Azam Khan was sentenced to three years in jail in the hate speech case.
After his disqualification as MLA, the Rampur Sadar Assembly seat was declared vacant. Azam Khan had then moved the Supreme Court against his disqualification from the state assembly after his conviction and three-year jail sentence in a hate speech case. The Supreme Court then directed a sessions court in UP’s Rampur to take up Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan’s appeal. However, last week, the sessions court dismissed Azam Khan's appeal, paving the way for a bypoll in his assembly constituency. Meanwhile, the Election Commission issued the notification for the Rampur bypolls.
The BJP submitted an application seeking the removal of Azam Khan’s name from the electoral roll citing provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
