Surat, November 14: In a shocking development, Muslim youths in the Surat East constituency greeted AIMIM chief, Asaduddin Owaisi with Modi, Modi slogans, when he visited Surat for the election campaign on Sunday (November 14). Besides that, the Muslim youth also showed black flags as a protest.

Owaisi

It should be noted, Owaisi was in Surat to campaign for the Surat East candidate of AIMIM ahead of state assembly elections. Surat East area is where the Gopipura area is situated which has a significant Muslim population. Some parts of the constituency have the Disturbed Areas Act in place which was brought in to prevent the polarisation of communities and demography change.

The video of the incident has started making rounds on social media. As per the video, when Owaisi got on the stage to address a rally, some Muslim youth who were present in the rally, started waving black flags and chanting 'Modi Modi'. They even chanted ‘wapis jao, wapis jao’ (go back) chants for Owaisi.

This is not the first time Owaisi has faced opposition in Gujarat, especially from Muslim residents. In May this year, when he was in Surat, many people of Muslim community had opposed him. In Surat’s Mithakhali area, local Muslim residents had shown flags to Owaisi to oppose him.

Last month, Asaduddin Owaisi announced that the AIMIM is looking to contest in the Gujarat polls from 30 seats out of the total 182 and has already declared six candidates. The party has announced candidates in some minority-dominated seats and is likely to field more nominees.

Assembly polls are scheduled to be held in Gujarat in two phases on December 1 and 5. Elections to the 182-member state assembly are being deemed a three-cornered contest among the ruling BJP, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.
