India’s first athletics world championship medal winner, Anju Bobby George occupies a special place in the country’s track and field history. The two-time Olympian also holds Indian women’s long jump national record. What makes her accomplishments even more remarkable is the fact that she did it all with a single kidney.
She is currently the senior vice-president of the Athletics Federation of India, the highest post occupied by a woman in its history. She was also bestowed upon with the Woman of the Year Award by World Athletics for grooming and encouraging young girls to take up sports in India. Even after hanging up her boots, she continues to inspire women to take up sports as career.
