More than 150 people were killed and several were injured in a deadly crowd crush at a packed Halloween event in central Seoul late Saturday, officials said, in one of South Korea's worst-ever accidents.
South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a period of national mourning Sunday, saying the government would pay for the medical care of those injured and the funerals of those who died.
The crowd surge and crush happened in the capital's popular Itaewon district, where local reports said as many as 100,000 people -- mostly in their teens and 20s -- had gone to celebrate Halloween.
Here are the reasons that caused the tragic stampede occurred in South Korea-
1. The Halloween event that was supposed to be three-day affair was the first Halloween celebration since the pandemic withoust any COVID restrictions.
2. The area's narrow alleyways and winding streets left thousands of people in suffocation
3. Domino effect: Recollecting the horror, eyewitnesses have said that they saw others falling like dominoes. The sudden onset of cardiac arrest might have made it impossible for the huge crowd to disperse itself properly and make space for the victims.
4. Eyewitness also accounts for little police presence and crowd control.
