Gwadar, September 27: In a major blow to Pakistan, Baloch freedom fighters have blown up the statue of Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah situated in the coastal city of Gwadar.
According to the Pakistani news agency Dawn, the incident took place on Sunday. The statue was blown up by explosives placed beneath the statue on Sunday morning, Dawn reported on Monday. The statue was erected earlier this year.
Gwadar Deputy Commissioner Major (retd) Abdul Kabir Khan said that the militants had entered the area, considered a safe zone, masquerading as tourists. Police are looking into the matter from all angles, assuring that the culprits will be caught soon.
“The demolition of Quaid-e-Azam’s statue in #Gwadar is an attack on Ideology of Pakistan. I request authorities to punish the perpetrators in the same way as we did with those behind the attack on Quaid-e-Azam residency in Ziarat,” Balochistan’s former home minister and current Senator Sarfraz Bugti tweeted.
According to the reports Bloch Republican Army has taken the responsibility for blowing up a statue of Muhammad Ali Jinnah on Gwadar Marine Drive.
Issuing the statement BRA said The betrayal and deception by Muhammad Ali Jinnah on March 27, 1948, led to the massacre of the Baloch people and the loss of its independent status.
This is not the first time, in 2013, Baloch militants blasted a 121-year-old building used by Jinnah at Ziarat and raked it with gunfire, triggering a fire that blazed for four hours, destroying furniture and memorabilia. Jinnah spent the last days of his life there as he suffered from tuberculosis. It was later declared a national monument.
Balochistan has been witnessing a spate of violence for several years, mostly due to the activities of the Baloch National Army. Recently, the BLA had targeted a motorcade of Chinese engineers at the Gwadar East Bay Expressway project in which two local children were killed and a Chinese national was injured.
